We’ve reached the third appointment of our Back to Bach concert series! The third protagonist of the series is the baroque flute, and we are excited to have flutist Stefano Bet join us again for this weekend’s performance! ♪♫♬

Speaking of Stefano Bet, we asked him to give us some information about the musical program that he prepared with our resident ensemble, and he delighted us with some curious facts about their chosen pieces.

For example, did you know that J. S. Bach was one of the first composers of his time to write music for the transverse flute? Or that the Sonata BWV 1035 in E major (with rare and impervious tonality) for transverse flute and basso continuo was composed in 1747 for the composer's visit to Potsdam, at the invitation of Emperor Frederick II of Prussia, a flutist himself? All four of the Sonata’s movements were inspired by the musical styles most in vogue in early eighteenth-century Europe.

The Sonata in B minor BWV 1030 for transverse flute and obbligato harpsichord is to be considered a trio, because the right hand of the harpsichordist is given a written melody (always the same) instead of chords for which to improvise extemporaneously as was usually the case when writing for basso continuo. Unique in its kind, with a rather extensive development, this complex sonata marks a turning point in the history of composition!
