Celebrate International Women's Day with Venice Music Project's concert of music by our favorite female composers! ♪♫♬
Barbara Strozzi, the most prominent female composer of the Baroque era, features in this week’s program together with two other important female composers, Antonia Bembo e Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, for a concert dedicated entirely to women.
So who are these women who were so well known and popular during the Baroque period, yet are rarely mentioned in current day?
All three were passionate about music, renowned and beloved composers in the varying cultural circles in which they exhibited their works. Given that they were also musicians, a harpsichordist in the case of E. Jacquet de la Guerre and singers in the cases of B. Strozzi and A. Bembo, they were able to perform their own compositions, thus delivering music with even greater interpretation and emotion!

Bembo and Strozzi were both students of Francesco Cavalli, who exerted his influence on the young composers until they developed their own personal style. It is often said of Strozzi that "thanks to the originality of her musical writing, she helped define the identity of Italian music of the early Baroque". Strikingly, in the compositions of Antonia Bembo one can note the progressive French influence consistent with her transfer to Paris where she performed at the court of King Louis XIV. During the singer’s Parisian period, fellow renowned composer Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre was also present, as she too composed for the court under the reign of Louis XV. We can therefore presume that these great female composers knew each other and shared musical ideas and thoughts.
