Venice Music Project is back, and we can't wait for our Inauguration Concert of Season 2020 on the 1st of March!

In the meantime, to whet your appetite, we are sending you some background about this concert, and would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our guest singers. The soloists performing with our soprano, Liesl Odenweller, at our Inauguration Concert, are Alexander Simpson, countertenor, and Dima Bakri, mezzosoprano, who are two promising young singers. Our Inauguration concert on 1 March will represent each of their debut with VMP, and we have dedicated each of them a newsletter so you can get to know them a bit beforehand.
Headshot 2019
This first newsletter is about Alexander Simpson, better known as Alex. Exuberant and enthusiastic, Alex was born and raised in London, where he started singing in a choir. He tells us: “I started singing properly in the school choir mainly because all the other people who did it were fun. I originally wanted to be an opera conductor and I only started taking singing more seriously when I got a choral scholarship to Cambridge. It was then that I realised it was much more rewarding to be on stage rather than the conductors podium!”

Alex is a countertenor who received his degree in vocal performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London, although he enjoys performing a wide range of repertoire and styles.

“My favorite opera(s) is the Ring Cycle by R. Wagner. I studied it at Cambridge, and became totally obsessed. Nothing can beat it for drama and intensity and it makes me cry all the time."

To counter this affirmation, Alex has revealed to us that his dream role would be Ottone in the Incoronazione di Poppea by C. Monteverdi, mostly because the character "has such gorgeous music".

In the Inauguration Concert, you will hear Alex sing arias both of the protagonist, Julius Caesar, and Ptolemy, his enemy. This is the first time that VMP has presented a program like this, and we are confident that the story of Caesar and Cleopatra, in this very shortened form, will enchant you.

And did you know that in Haendel’s version, there is a happy ending??
More information will arrive soon. Hurry and make your reservations!
